The Ex Nihilo Guide: Five Fragrances From Paris's Boldest Niche House

Ex Nihilo is a Paris niche house founded in 2013 that still flies under the radar. This guide walks through five of its fragrances, from the fruity-floral signature Fleur Narcotique...

Ex Nihilo is Latin for "out of nothing," and it is also the name of one of the more daring houses to come out of Paris in the last decade. Founded in 2013 by Sylvie Loday, Olivier Royère and Benoît Verdier, the brand opened its boutique on Rue Saint-Honoré with a simple idea: build fragrances from scratch, without leaning on an existing legacy or a famous nose's back catalog, and let the bottles speak for themselves. More than a decade on, Ex Nihilo still isn't a household name the way Creed or Tom Ford is, which is exactly why it rewards the kind of curious nose that likes finding a house before everyone else does.

The line is built around contrast: sweet, fruity-floral compositions sit next to sueded ambers and sharp, modern woods, and almost everything is engineered to last and to be noticed. Below are five fragrances that show the range of what Ex Nihilo does well, each one available as a decant so you can actually test how it behaves on your skin before deciding on a full bottle.

Fleur Narcotique: the house's floral signature

Released in 2014 and composed by Quentin Bisch, Fleur Narcotique is the fragrance most people associate with Ex Nihilo, and it earns the reputation. It opens with litchi, bergamot and peach, moves into a peony, orange blossom and jasmine heart, and settles into musk, moss and woody notes. It reads as a fruity floral on paper, but the moss and musk base keep it from turning candy-sweet, giving it more structure than most fragrances in this category.

Devil Tender: rose with a suede trail

Nadège Le Garlantezec built Devil Tender in 2016 around a Bulgarian rose heart, pulled in with rose water, rose petals and tea, and opened with pink pepper, peach, pink grapefruit and bergamot. The base is where it gets interesting: suede, heliotrope, vanilla, sandalwood and white cedar extract turn a fairly classic rose into something warmer and more skin-like, closer to a soft leather jacket than a bouquet.

Lust in Paradise: lychee and peony with real lift

Lust in Paradise, created by Louise Turner and launched in 2019, is a fruity floral built on a single sharp note of pink pepper up top, a heart of peony, litchi and Givaudan's Petalia, and a base of musk, white cedar extract and amber. It's lighter and more linear than Fleur Narcotique, which makes it a good option for anyone who wants the same fruity-floral family but a quicker, less syrupy drydown.

Blue Talisman: the newer, more wearable direction

Launched in 2023 by perfumer Jordi Fernández, Blue Talisman is where Ex Nihilo leans into the kind of clean, modern musk that's been dominating niche releases the last few years. Pear, bergamot, mandarin orange and ginger open it, orange blossom and Georgywood carry the heart, and musk, Ambrofix, Akigalawood and cedar close it out. It's the most unisex and office-friendly fragrance in this lineup, and the bottle, a gradient blue glass with a knurled gold cap, is also one of the most striking things on the shelf.

Speed Legends: the house's woody, sportier edge

Also from Jordi Fernández and also released in 2023, Speed Legends opens on bergamot and pink pepper, pivots through blackcurrant, and lands on vetiver, tonka bean and amber. It's the most overtly masculine, gym-bag-and-leather-jacket fragrance Ex Nihilo makes, built for projection rather than subtlety, and it's a useful reference point if you want to know whether the house works outside its fruity-floral comfort zone.

Why decant a house you don't know yet

Ex Nihilo fragrances run concentrated and are not cheap at full size, so testing one blind is a real financial decision, not a small one. That's the whole logic behind a ScentPrint: instead of guessing from notes on a page, you try a 1, 3, 5 or 8 ml decant on your own skin, over a real day, before you commit to a full bottle. If you're not sure which of these five fits your taste, the scent finder quiz is a faster way to narrow it down than reading five more reviews. You can also browse the full line in the Ex Nihilo collection.
