The Initio Parfums Guide: Five Fragrances That Explain the House

Initio Parfums Privés launched in 2015 with no famous perfumer and no family story, just an idea. These five fragrances, from Absolute Aphrodisiac to Atomic Rose, show what the house...

Plenty of niche houses lead with a founder's name and a family story. Initio Parfums Privés, whose name is Latin for "beginning," launched in 2015 without one. The French label is backed by the Sprecher Berrier Group, the same group behind Parfums de Marly, but there was no perfumer-as-celebrity story attached. The idea came first: scents pitched as something that acts on instinct and attraction, over and above smelling good on skin.

Eleven years later, Initio is better known than plenty of houses twice its age, mostly because two of its scents, Oud for Greatness and Side Effect, became fixtures on fragrance forums and in YouTube reviews. But the house is bigger than its two loudest hits. Here are five Initio fragrances, in release order, that show what the brand is built on.

Absolute Aphrodisiac (2015)

Absolute Aphrodisiac (listed at Fragmentum as Absolute Aphrodisiaque) came out the year the brand launched. It is built around white flowers, amber, vanilla, musk and castoreum, and that animalic, skin-warm mix told you right away that Initio was not going to play it safe or clean. Everything that followed grew out of it.

Side Effect (2016)

Side Effect pairs rum and tobacco with cinnamon, saffron, sandalwood and hedione. Initio doesn't name a perfumer for it on its own site, which fits how the house markets itself: the idea in front, not the nose. It reads boozy and warm without tipping into the overly sweet gourmand territory that a lot of "rum and tobacco" fragrances fall into. Side Effect belongs to Carnal Blends, the Initio line built around a high dose of hedione; Atomic Rose, High Frequency and Narcotic Delight sit in the same collection, among others.

Oud for Greatness (2018)

This is the fragrance most people mean when they say "that Initio oud." Saffron, nutmeg and lavender open into agarwood at the heart, settling into patchouli and musk. It's a modern, easy take on oud: warm and spicy rather than barnyard-sharp. That is a big part of why it crossed over from perfume forums into the mainstream.

Rehab (2018)

Rehab is the quiet one. It opens with lavender and bergamot, moves through cedar, vetiver and patchouli, and lands on sandalwood, musk and guaiac wood. Woody-aromatic rather than sweet, it is the Initio most people use as a layering base, and the house files it under its Hedonist Collection for that reason. The classic pairing is Rehab under Side Effect: the woods steady the rum and tobacco without sweetening them.

Atomic Rose (2019)

Atomic Rose starts with a rose that could easily have been delicate: bergamot and pink pepper up top, Bulgarian rose, Turkish rose and Egyptian jasmine at the heart. Then it grounds all of that in Madagascar vanilla, amber and a heavy dose of hedione. It sits in Carnal Blends next to Side Effect, and it shows Initio doing to a floral what it usually does to gourmands and woods: making it heavier than you expect.

How to try five Initio scents without buying five bottles

Buying five full bottles from one niche house just to find your favorite is not how anyone shops, and that is the problem decants exist to solve. Every Initio above is available at Fragmentum in 1, 3, 5 and 8 ml, so you can line up the whole set, one per day, for less than the price of one bottle.

That is the whole idea behind ScentPrint, the way Fragmentum thinks about finding a signature scent: sample first, wear it for real, and only then decide on a bottle. If you are not sure where to start with Initio, or with niche perfumery in general, the Scent Finder quiz narrows it down from what you already like. You can also browse the full Initio Parfums collection at Fragmentum to see what else the house makes.
