The Mind Games Guide: Four Extraits Built Like Chess Moves

Mind Games is a niche extrait de parfum house built entirely around chess psychology, with each scent composed as a different move on the board. This guide breaks down J'Adoube,...

Most niche houses lean on a place, a memory, or a raw material as their founding idea. Mind Games leans on a board game. The brand, started by Alex and Mariana Shalbaf, builds its entire collection around chess: not the pieces as decoration, but the psychology of the match itself, the calculation, the bluffing, the moment you commit to a move you cannot take back. Their own language calls it "an infinite, cosmic game," and the question every bottle is built to answer is whether you risk it all on the opening move or hold your secrets close until the right one arrives.

The fragrances are extrait de parfum, formulated with perfumers trained at Symrise, and three of the four we carry were composed by perfumer Christelle Laprade, with J'Adoube composed by Nathalie Benareau. They are not cheap: a 100 ml bottle runs $395 direct from the brand. That is exactly the kind of price tag a decant exists to de-risk. Here are the four Mind Games extraits in the Fragmentum catalog, what they actually smell like, and which kind of player each one suits.

J'Adoube: The Recalibration Move

In chess, "j'adoube" is what you say out loud before touching a piece just to straighten it, a verbal flag that you are adjusting, not committing to a move. Nathalie Benareau built the fragrance around that idea of recalibration. It opens with red currant and Madagascar mandarin, moves into a heart of bright pomegranate and Damascene rose, and settles into a base built on a black suede accord, benzoin, patchouli and Sulawesi patchouli oil. The brand describes it as a balance between spontaneity and control, and that tension is genuinely there on skin: a juicy, romantic opening that firms up into something darker and more grounded. Try J'Adoube.

Blockade: The Knight's Armor

Blockade takes its name from the chess tactic of parking a piece directly in front of an opponent's pawn to freeze it in place. Laprade's brief for the fragrance was the image of a knight's metal armor paired with crushed leaves, ginger and pepper. In the bottle that becomes a top of mango skin, pink pepper, tomato leaf and Capua bergamot, a heart of lavender, mango flower and star anise, and a base of velvet leather, patchouli, ambrostar and oud. It is the most obviously gourmand-adjacent opening of the four thanks to that mango, but the leather and oud base keep it from ever going sweet. Good pick if you want fruit at the top and real weight underneath. Try Blockade.

French Defense: The Confident Opening

Named after one of the oldest defensive chess openings, French Defense is the closest thing in the lineup to a classic gourmand-floral. It opens with dark, liquor-soaked cherry alongside violet leaves and chamomile, moves through a heart of geranium, rose absolute and mimosa, and finishes on amber, cedarwood and blonde wood. The brand pitches it as a confidence scent, and the cherry-liqueur opening is bold enough to back that up, but the soft florals and warm wood base keep it wearable rather than loud. Try French Defense.

Queening: The Endgame Reward

"Queening" is the chess term for what happens when a pawn survives the entire board and reaches the far row: it gets promoted to a queen. The fragrance is built as a reward scent, opening with clean cotton accord, cypress and apple, moving into orris, aged rum and saffron, and closing on whipped vanilla bean, musk and coconut. Of the four, it is the most straightforwardly gourmand: creamy, boozy and vanilla-forward, closer to a dessert than a chess opening. If you already know you like TOM FORD Lost Cherry or Angels' Share, this is the Mind Games bottle to sample first. Try Queening.

Why Sample the Whole Board First

At $395 a bottle, buying blind on any of these four is a real bet. A decant lets you actually play out the match on your own skin before you commit: J'Adoube if you want rose and suede in tension, Blockade if you want mango and oud, French Defense if you want cherry and warm wood, Queening if you want rum and vanilla. Every one of them ships as a 1, 3, 5 or 8 ml decant, so you can run two or three side by side for a fraction of the full-size price. If you are not sure which lane fits your taste at all, the ScentPrint quiz is built to narrow that down before you spend a cent on a full bottle.
